How is exact age calculated in years, months, and days?
Exact age is calculated by finding the absolute calendar difference between a birth date and a target date. The calendar difference tracks the actual number of days in each specific month and accounts for leap years containing 366 days instead of 365. For example, if a child is born on February 28, 2024 (a leap year) and evaluated on March 1, 2026, the exact age is computed as 2 years and 1 day, reflecting the specific 29-day month in 2024.
How do different countries count age?
Most countries use the Western chronological age system, where a person starts at age 0 at birth and gains one year on each annual anniversary. However, some traditional East Asian cultures historically used systems where a baby is considered 1 year old at birth and gains a year on the Lunar New Year or Gregorian New Year, meaning a child born on December 31 could be considered 2 years old on January 1.
What is the Korean age system?
The Korean age system ('Hanguk-nai') is a traditional reckoning method where a person is 1 year old at birth and ages by one year on every New Year's Day, rather than on their actual birthday. Under this system, a baby born on December 31 becomes 2 years old on January 1, just a day later. In June 2023, South Korea officially transitioned to the international chronological standard for official administrative, legal, and medical documents.
